Beacon is embracing future design trends by celebrating 2019’s Dulux Colour of the Year, Spiced Honey™, a warm amber tone, inspired by the beauty and versatility of honey itself.
This is the 16th year of ColourFutures™, where Dulux along with international design experts are able to share knowledge from across the world and the cultural landscape, to define the design trends that best capture the times - identifying one hero paint colour for the coming year.
Working in collaboration with Dulux, Beacon has been exploring how ‘Spiced Honey’ could be adopted by the hospitality industry and developing tips for using the colour.
Dulux Creative Director, Marianne Shillingford outlined that the colour Spiced Honey™ was chosen as the 2019 colour of the year because it captures the essence of important global trends and represents a growing feeling that we need to be resilient in great times of change.
Marianne said “In the uncertain months ahead we need to be like bees who work cooperatively together as a hive to produce honey, which is prized for soothing and energising qualities. The colour itself reflects these qualities in design by creating mood enhancing interiors which are both relaxed and gently stimulating. Spiced Honey™ may be the Queen Bee of the colourful hive for 2019, but just like the real thing, she has a supporting palette of hard working modern shades from deepest Vintage Smoke to the richness of Velvet Cake.
This rich unified look satisfies the ‘home away from home’ trend many guests are looking for. Marianne continued: “The best way to use Spiced Honey™ in the hospitality industry is to treat it just like the real thing. You generally wouldn’t have a bowl of honey on its own, but adding a good spoonful to recipes to enhance flavour is the perfect way to use it. Teamed with muted pinks and lilacs like Floating Petal or Violet Dream, or paired with delicate greys and off whites like Garden Grey and Gentle Moon, the colour takes on a soothing quality.”
Timothy Nichol, Buyer at Beacon, expanded by offering his thoughts: “2019 is set to be a year of great change, with Brexit just around the corner, and many things still unknown. The supportive and calming qualities of Spiced Honey™ make it the perfect colour for the year ahead. I recommend operators look to weave in subtle hints to stay ahead of the competition and keep costs to a minimum.
“A touch of the colour on one wall in a hotel room or lobby, or a bar or restaurant is enough to recognise the trend, and stay ahead of the game without breaking the bank. Other options are to look for changeable soft furnishings in the shade such as cushion covers or table settings, which are easily changeable but equally noticeable.”
